A YAG laser is a specialized medical laser that produces highly focused light energy. This allows the surgeon to make precise openings in ocular structures inside the eye without any surgical cuts. At Jyoti Eye Hospital, we utilize the YAG laser for two key outpatient procedures: treating "after-cataract" clouding and managing closed-angle glaucoma pressure risks.

Because the procedure is non-invasive, it is performed in our consultation rooms (OPD) rather than the operating theater. It is painless, takes only a few minutes, requires no stitches, and does not need patches.

Immediate Visual Restoration

Patients undergoing YAG laser treatment can return to their daily routines immediately. In the case of Capsulotomy, visual clarity is restored within a few hours as the pupillary pathway is cleared of opacification.

Dual Applications

YAG Capsulotomy (After-Cataract)

Months or years after successful cataract surgery, the natural lens capsule holding the IOL can thicken and become cloudy. This is called Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO) or "After-Cataract," causing fuzzy vision. The YAG laser creates a clear opening in the center of the cloudy capsule, instantly restoring your original post-cataract vision.

YAG Peripheral Iridotomy (Glaucoma PI)

In patients with narrow drainage angles (closed-angle glaucoma), fluid cannot flow naturally out of the eye, risking a sudden, painful rise in pressure that can damage the optic nerve. The YAG laser makes a tiny, microscopic opening in the outer edge of the iris, allowing fluid to bypass the narrow channel and immediately lowering intraocular pressure.

Non-Thermal Photodisruption Technology

The Nd:YAG laser operates by focused optical breakdown (photodisruption) to create a clean opening in intraocular tissue membranes without thermal damage.

By focusing the energy precisely within a few microns of the target membrane (whether the cloudy posterior lens capsule or the outer peripheral iris), Dr. Idariya avoids any contact with adjacent structures like the intraocular lens or the cornea, securing excellent outpatient clinical safety profiles.

What to Expect During Your YAG Treatment

1. Pupil Dilation

Specialized drops are applied to dilate your pupil (for Capsulotomy) or prepare the iris (for Iridotomy), along with numbing drops. This takes about 30 minutes.

2. Laser Delivery

You sit in front of a slit lamp microscope. Dr. Idariya places a specialized contact lens on your eye to focus the laser beam. You will hear clicking sounds; the treatment is painless.

3. Post-Check & Go

We measure your eye pressure shortly after the procedure. Once confirmed stable, you are free to go home. No eye patches are required.
