Phaco-emulsification Surgery

Premium Cataract Surgery

Micro-Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS) via Phaco

Phacoemulsification, commonly known as Phaco, is the gold standard for modern cataract removal. Unlike older cataract surgeries that required large cuts, stitches, and weeks of painful recovery, phacoemulsification uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to dissolve the cataract through a microscopic opening.

During the procedure, Dr. Idariya makes a tiny, self-sealing incision (approximately 2.2mm to 2.8mm) at the edge of the cornea. An ultrasonic handpiece—vibrating at high frequencies—is inserted into the eye. These sound waves gently break the cloudy lens into microscopic fragments, which are simultaneously aspirated (suctioned out) by the probe. Once the capsule is empty, a flexible, foldable Intraocular Lens (IOL) is injected, unfolding inside the capsule.

Key Patient Benefits

No Injection (Topical Drops)

Local numbing eye drops are used. No painful needles around the eye.

No Stitches (Stitchless)

Micro-incision is self-sealing. No stitches to remove later.

No Eye Patches

No uncomfortable eye patches. Clear shields are worn briefly.

No Heavy Dark Glasses

Simple, light protective glasses replace heavy post-op frames.

Surgical Dynamics

Ultrasonic Phacoemulsification Handpiece

The phaco handpiece probe oscillates at ultrasonic speeds, generating local kinetic energy that emulsifies (dissolves) the cloudy lens material.

By gently fragmenting the cataract, Dr. Idariya can aspirate the tiny particles through a microscopic watertight port. This prevents corneal trauma and maintains stable chamber pressure throughout the surgical steps.

Step-by-Step Surgical Journey

1. Anesthetic Drops

The eye is dilated and numbed using topical drops. No block injections are needed, keeping the patient comfortable and awake.

2. Micro-Incision

A self-sealing incision (approx. 2.2mm) is created. This micro-opening is watertight and closes on its own under natural eye pressure.

3. Phaco Fragmentation

The ultrasonic probe fragments the hard, cloudy lens matter and suctions it out, leaving the natural clear capsule membrane intact.

4. IOL Injection

A foldable lens is injected through the same micro-incision, unfolding inside the lens capsule. Vision recovery begins immediately.

Clinical Safety

Autoclaving and Infection Prevention

Because intraocular surgeries involve opening the eye, there is a risk of post-surgical infection if sterility is compromised. To prevent this, Jyoti Eye Hospital maintains high standards of infection control inside our surgical rooms.

All surgical instruments undergo rigorous pressure sterilization in steam-vacuum autoclaves, validated with chemical indicators. We use single-use disposable items (needles, blades, tubing, drapes) to ensure patient safety.
