Cataract & IOL Selection Guide

Ocular Conditions

What is a Cataract (Safed Motia)?

A cataract is a gradual clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens, which lies behind the iris and pupil. In a healthy eye, this lens is perfectly clear and focuses light onto the retina to form sharp images. As we age, the proteins inside the lens begin to clump together, slowly turning the lens cloudy, yellow, or opaque. This blocks light from passing clearly to the retina, leading to progressive vision loss.

Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process, but they can be accelerated by factors such as diabetes, prolonged exposure to UV rays, eye injuries, smoking, or certain steroid medications.

Common Cataract Symptoms:

  • Fuzzy, cloudy, or blurred vision
  • Severe glare from headlights at night
  • Seeing halos around light sources
  • Colors appearing yellowed or faded
  • Frequent changes in spectacle power
  • Double vision in one eye

Lens Selection Guide

Choosing the Right Intraocular Lens (IOL)

When the cloudy cataract is surgically removed, it is replaced with a permanent artificial lens called an Intraocular Lens (IOL). We offer a range of premium lens options to match your lifestyle and visual goals.

Monofocal IOLs

Single-distance focus correction.

Monofocal lenses are designed to provide clear vision at one focal point (usually far distance). While they offer excellent clarity for driving or watching television, you will still need to wear reading glasses for close-up tasks such as reading, sewing, or using a computer.

Multifocal & EDoF IOLs

Spectacle independence for near & far.

These lenses feature multiple zones that focus light at different distances, allowing you to see clearly for both far (driving) and near (reading) tasks without glasses. We offer premium brands such as Zeiss Acri.LISA and AMO ReZoom.

Toric IOLs

Astigmatism correction built-in.

If you have corneal astigmatism, standard monofocal and multifocal lenses will not correct it, meaning you would still require distance glasses. Toric IOLs (such as AcrySof Toric) correct both the cataract and astigmatism in a single step, ensuring sharp vision.

Accommodative IOLs (Crystalens)

Flexes with the eye's natural muscles.

These advanced lenses are designed with tiny hinges that allow the eye's ciliary muscles to move the lens forward and backward. This mimics the accommodation process of a young, natural lens, offering seamless transition focus between far, intermediate (computer), and near distances.

Microincision IOLs (MICS)

Implanted through a tiny 1.7mm opening.

Microincision Intraocular Lenses are made from highly elastic acrylic polymers that can be rolled tightly and injected through a microscopic incision (1.7mm to 2.2mm). This tiny opening heals rapidly without any stitches, reducing postoperative astigmatism and speeding recovery.

Quality Assurance

Only the World's Leading Ophthalmic Brands

We believe that your eyes deserve the best. To ensure optimal optical clarity, long-term stability, and biocompatibility, Jyoti Eye Hospital does not use sub-standard generic implants.

We source all our folding intraocular lenses directly from the world's most trusted medical technology companies, including:

  • Zeiss (Germany): Renowned for aberration-free high definition visual contrast.
  • Alcon AcrySof IQ (USA): Offers yellow chromophore filters that protect the retina from harmful blue light.
  • Bausch & Lomb Akreos AO (USA): Zero-spherical aberration design that improves night driving contrast.
