Understanding Astigmatism & Toric Solutions

Astigmatism is a common vision condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. Instead of being perfectly round like a basketball, the cornea of an astigmatic eye is shaped more like a football, having one meridian significantly more curved than the other. This prevents light from focusing on a single point on the retina, resulting in blurred or distorted vision at all distances.

Toric Lenses are specially designed to address this unequal curvature. Unlike standard spherical lenses which have the same refractive power in all directions, toric lenses have different focusing powers in different meridians to counteract the astigmatism.

The Critical Factor: Rotational Stability

Because toric lenses must align with the specific meridian of your eye's curvature, they must not rotate. To ensure stability, toric lenses are designed with weighted stabilization zones (ballasting) or thin-thick edges, allowing the lens to self-align on your cornea through natural blinking.
